The Prison Ministry is named after the “Good Thief”, St. Dismas – who Jesus promised would be with Him in Paradise. The ministry is a way to bring the Catholic faith to those incarcerated offering God’s unconditional love, compassionate forgiveness, and to spread the message of hope for those who often times feel hopeless. St. Dismas is a prison ministry that supports and coordinates outreach ministry by various parish-based volunteers to the imprisoned, serving inmates with Bible study, Eucharist, one on one counseling. Volunteers visit incarcerated men and women on a weekly basis in the Johnson County, Kansas detention (jail) system both in Olathe & Gardner. Those that we visit are either awaiting trial, or sentencing or transfer to a more permanent facility or serving sentencing at the Johnson County Detention Centers. They also minister to the Youth Detention Centers in both Johnson County (Olathe) and Wyandotte County (Kansas City, KS) as well as support for the Mentoring for Success Program for those soon to be released from the State Prisons.
